Bedforms of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica: Character and Origin

چکیده
Bedforms of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica both record and affect ice flow, as shown by geophysical data simple models. Glacier flows across the tectonic fabric Antarctic rift system with its bedrock highs sedimentary basins. Swath radar seismic surveys glacier bed have revealed soft-sediment flutes 100 m or more high extending 15 km basins downglacier from highs. Flutes end at prominent hard-bedded moats on stoss sides next topographic We use models to show that flow against topography increases pressure between till upglacier along over a distance scales topography. In this basal zone pressure, ice-contact water would be excluded, thus increasing drag ice-till coupling flux, removing allow erosion creates moats. Till carried highlands then deposited in lee-side positions forming bedforms prograde time, remain soft top through feedbacks match till-deformational fluxes well The part surveyed here are because has persisted long time geological setting, not is anomalous. Bedform development likely caused evolution lubricating were redistributed, eroded grew.

Connected subglacial lake drainage beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica
We present conventional and swath altimetry data from Cryosat-2 revealing a system of subglacial lakes that drained between June 2013 and January 2014 under the central part of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. Much of the 10 drainage happened in less than six months, with an apparent connection between three lakes spanning more than 130 km. Hydropotential analysis of the glacier bed shows a l...

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is the only remaining marine ice sheet from the last glacial period. The bed is primarily below sea level and slopes down from the coast to the interior. It has been hypothesized that the ice sheet may be susceptible to run-away grounding line retreat [Weertman, 1974] leading to rapid disintegration and sea level rise. Were the WAIS to completely melt, the wa...
متن کاملBed conditions of Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica
Although 90% of Antarctica‟s discharge occurs via its fast-flowing ice streams, our ability to project future ice-sheet response has been limited by poor observational constraints on the ice-bed conditions used in numerical models to determine basal slip. We have helped address this observational deficit by acquiring and analysing a series of seismic reflection profiles to determine basal condi...
متن کاملAirborne-radar and ice-core observations of annual snow accumulation over Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica confirm the spatiotemporal variability of global and regional atmospheric models
[1] We use an airborne-radar method, verified with ice-core accumulation records, to determine the spatiotemporal variations of snow accumulation over Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica between 1980 and 2009. We also present a regional evaluation of modeled accumulation in Antarctica. Comparisons between radar-derived measurements and model outputs show that three global models capture the inter...
متن کاملOcean mixing beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica
Ice shelves around Antarctica are vulnerable to an increase in ocean-driven melting, with the melt rate depending on ocean temperature and the strength of flow inside the ice-shelf cavities. We present measurements of velocity, temperature, salinity, turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and thermal variance dissipation rate beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica. These mea...
